Brief history:
Lawyers Helping Lawyers (LHL) first began in 1983 as a task force when several lawyers got together to help other lawyers with alcohol/drug dependencies. In 1985 ALAPALS was formed as a formal committee within the State Bar. Members of this committee networked with each other to help intervene with other colleagues when alcohol/drug dependencies were suspected.
Following the committee’s proposal to hire a director and approval of Board of Bar Commissioners, the Association established in September 1998, a statewide Lawyer Assistance Program.
Purpose:
- To protect the interests of clients from harm caused by impaired lawyers.
- To protect the integrity of the legal profession from harm caused by impaired lawyers.
- To educate the bench and bar about the prevalence of drug dependencies and/or mental health illnesses within the profession.
- To provide immediate and continuing help to lawyers, judges and law students who suffer from dependency and other types of mental health disorders.
