Ala. Lawyer Assistance Foundation Renamed In Honor Of Jeanne Marie Leslie
The Alabama Lawyer Assistance Program Committee has voted to rename the Alabama Lawyer Assistance Foundation in honor of Jeanne Marie Leslie. The ALAF will now be known as the “Jeanne Marie Leslie Foundation." For 14 years, Leslie served the members of the Alabama State Bar as director of the Alabama Lawyer Assistance Program. She died last year.
The ALAF is a nonprofit corporation under the management of an elected Board of Directors. The purpose of the foundation is to provide financial assistance to Alabama lawyers suffering from addiction, depression and other mental health illnesses, but lack the resources to pay for appropriate help. Lawyers recovering from addiction and other mental health illnesses can and do return as valuable members of their families, their communities and their profession. ALAF provides the necessary means to get lawyers treatment during the most difficult times. Repayment is expected once the lawyer is back on his or her feet, so money will be available to aid the next lawyer in need.
It was through Jeanne Marie’s patient, guiding spirit that the lawyer assistance program was able to offer compassion, comfort and immediate confidential help to lawyers, judges and members of their staff who suffered from addictions and other types of mental health disorders.
