Membership Status Information |

Occupational License |
|
(Section 40-12-49, Code of Alabama, 1975, as amended) An attorney who engages in the active
practice of law is required to purchase an occupational license. The practice of law is defined in Section 34-3-6,
Code of Alabama, 1975, as amended.
Occupational License Fee: $300.00
A late penalty of 15% ($45.00) is added to occupational license fee payments received after October 31st.
Fees postmarked October 31 but not received by that date are considered late and penalty applies.

Special Membership |
|
(Sections 34-3-17 & 18, Code of Alabama, 1975, as amended) An attorney NOT engaged in the
active practice of law in Alabama may pay special membership dues to remain a member in good standing.
Those exempt from licensing by virtue of a position held, i.e. judgeships, attorneys general, U.S.
attorneys, district attorneys, etc., also qualify for special memberships. (NOTE: Special membership
DOES NOT permit you to engage in the private practice of law in Alabama.)
Special Membership Dues: $150
Dues payment includes a $15.00 subscription to The Alabama
Lawyer and ADDENDUM newsletter.

Inactive |
|
An attorney who chooses not to purchase an occupational license or pay special membership dues will be
removed from the Alabama State Bar roll of attorneys in good standing. Those in this status are not considered
members in good standing. At the present time, an attorney may reactivate his/her membership at any time by
paying either of the above membership fees.

New Admittee |
|
Anyone admitted to the bar between October 1 and September 30 of a bar year. New admittees are required to pay
fees the October following their admission to the bar.

Certificate of Good Standing |
|
A certificate of good standing is available by request to all bar members, who are in good standing. There is no
charge for the certificates and no limit on the number of certificates that a member may request. Certificates of
good standing can also be mailed to employers, bar associations, etc., upon request. Certificates may be requested
by e-mail to ms@alabar.org or by phone (334) 269-1515.

Identification Numbers |
|
Every member is automatically assigned a state bar identification number on their admission date to the bar.
This number is used when reporting CLE credit, paying license fees and special membership dues, or accessing Casemaker. This
number is printed on the wallet license card attached to your license or may be requested by email,
ms@alabar.org or by written request to:

Alabama State Bar members are also assigned a six-digit court identification code
by the Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) that is to be used to track civil case filings, as well as other
cases handled by each attorney. The code is the first three letters of the attorney's last name followed by a sequential
three-digit number. This number may be obtained by calling AOC at 1-866-954-9411.
