Ethan worked with Centro de Estrategia y Desarrollo S.C. in Mexico City a public policy think-tank, was a counselor in the UA Admissions office, and joined Bradley Arant in 2003. His activities include the Young Lawyers division of the American Bar Association, where he was assistant editor of The Young Lawyer, a District Representative for AL & GA, Assembly Clerk, Chair of the Host Committee, Assembly Speaker, and is a member of the Litigation Section and a House of Delegates Representatives. He was in the Leadership Class of 2010 of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, AL & MS Chapter. The attorney who recommended Ethan said, “I am writing in support of Ethan Tidmore’s application for the Alabama State Bar Leadership Forum. Ethan is the kind of young lawyer that would be an asset to the Leadership Forum because of his character and his demonstrated record of leadership with the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. I worked very closely with Ethan during my term as the Assembly Clerk and then as Assembly Speaker of the YLD in 2007-2009. Ethan succeeded me in these offices in 2008-2010. These positions are two of five nationally elected officers in the 150,000 member YLD. They are responsible for coordinating and presiding over the YLD’s Midyear and Annual Assembly, which is the principal legislative body if the YLD consisting of approximately 200 young lawyer delegates from around the country. Throughout his involvement in the YLD, Ethan has been hard-working and committed to the YLD and the ABA as a whole, and has gone above and beyond what was expected of him. Ethan also served as the Chairman of the Host Committee of the YLD’s Fall Conference held in his hometown of Birmingham. Ethan spearheaded highly successful fundraising efforts for the Birmingham conference, and many conference attendees have said that it was one of the best YLD conferences in recent memory. Ethan’s continued dedication and leadership to young lawyers has been recognized and appreciated by his peers. Upon completion of his term as Assembly Speaker, Ethan was elected to a three-year term as the YLD’s Delegate-at-Large to the ABA House of Delegates. In this role, Ethan represents the interests of young lawyers nationwide in the House of Delegates, and he also leads the Young Lawyers Caucus. Ethan is an exemplary attorney with high moral standards. He is thoughtful, diligent and committed to the roles he undertakes and is highly respected among his peers. I believe that Ethan is a rising star in the ABA and would be a very valuable addition to the Alabama State Bar’s Leadership Forum program.”
In his own words, Ethan said, “In late 2005, after I had been practicing law for two years, I realized that I was missing out on an important aspect of being a lawyer – serving in a bar organization. I decided to become involved with the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and, over the last six years, have had the great privilege of serving in a number of different leadership positions within that organization. I started out as an assistant editor of The Young Lawyer publication. I was then selected by the Alabama State Bar Young Lawyers Section to serve as the YLD’s District Representative for AL & GA. In 2008, I successfully ran for Assembly Clerk, which is one of five nationally elected officer positions in the YLD. In 2009, I had the privilege of serving as the Assembly Speaker, which is the chief legislative officer of the YLD and the second-highest leadership position in this 150,000 member organization. This past year, I began a three-year term as the YLD’s Delegate-at-Large to the ABA House of Delegates. All told, in the past five years I have devoted more than 1600 hours to my work in the ABA. As Assembly Speaker, I had a unique platform to work on issues of importance to young lawyers nationally. One of my goals as the Assembly Speaker was to help ensure that the voices of young lawyers are heard within the larger ABA. As part of that goal, I spent a great deal of time encouraging the internal development of resolutions within the YLD, which could then be debated and brought to the larger ABA House of Delegates. These efforts were successful, as more internal YLD resolutions were developed and debated during my year as Assembly Speaker than at any time in recent memory, and two of those resolutions were brought before the ABA House of Delegates and adopted as ABA policy. It has been an incredible honor to be involved with, and a leader in, the YLD. While I view my work in the YLD as my most important contribution to the legal profession and my community, I also value my involvement with local groups. For example, I was a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society MS Leadership Class of 2010; I am actively involved with my local church; and I remain committed to my alma mater, the University of Alabama. I am on the Leadership Board of the UA’s College of Arts & Sciences, am on the board of UA’s John Fraser Ramsey Award, and am a fellow in the Blackburn Institute. One of my goals is to become more involved in the work of the Alabama State Bar, and I view that as being the principal mission of the Leadership Forum. By participating in the Leadership Forum, I hope to find new opportunities for serving in the bar and building on the foundation of service that I have gained through my work with the YLD.”
