“A new moral principle is emerging which holds that the only authority deserving one’s allegiance is that which is freely and knowingly granted by the led to the leader in response to, and in proportion to, the clearly evident servant stature of the leader. Those who chose to follow this principle will not casually accept the authority of existing institutions. Rather, they will freely respond only to Individuals who are chosen as leaders because they are proven and trusted servants. To the extent that this principle prevails in the future, the only truly viable institutions will be those that are predominantly servant-led” —Robert K. Greenleaf

“Leaders we admire do not place themselves at the center; they place others there.  They do not seek the attention of people; the give it to others.  They do not focus on satisfying their own aims and desires; they look for ways to respond to the needs and interests of their constituents.  They are not self-centered; they concentrate on the constituent…Leaders serve a purpose and the people who have made it possible for them to lead…In serving a purpose, leaders strengthen credibility by demonstrating that they are not in it for themselves; instead, they have the interests of the institution, department, or team and its constituents at heart.  Being a servant may not be what many leaders had in mind when they choose to take responsibility for the vision and direction of their organization or team, but serving others is the most glorious and rewarding of all leadership tasks”—James Kouzes and Barry Posner

  • To form a pool of lawyers that will be leaders both in the State and local bar associations as well as their communities.

WHAT ALUMNI HAVE TO SAY ABOUT LEADERSHIP FORUM:

“The Leadership Forum was the best experience I have participated in as an attorney. The speakers, as well as interaction with my classmates, widened my perspective and offered different and new views and ideas on problems and issues facing the legal community and our state. It renewed my enthusiasm and my commitment to the practice of law, my clients and my community. The Leadership Forum gave me the foundation for making informed decisions about how to be a better citizen, attorney and leader. I had developed a routine in which I worked long hours and never really raised my head to “see” what was going on around me and how I could be a better citizen and leader to address some of those issues. Leadership Forum changed that attitude and changed me. More than that, I developed a network of thirty new or renewed friends in the Alabama legal community that I genuinely like and respect.”

“I applied for Leadership Forum because I had reached a point in my life where I needed a new challenge, both professionally and personally, but I didn’t know where to look. The resulting six months exposed me to so many new things within my own community, which I was really able to pick and choose what to get involved with. I became not just educated but a passionate consumer of opportunities. That’s the real strength of Leadership Forum: while it’s true that you learn leadership skills, what you’re really learning is where the opportunities are for you to develop your talents while helping others.”

“The program was absolutely top notch. I have raved regarding the program not only to other lawyers, but to others outside the legal realm. It presented us not only with an opportunity to from excellent speakers, but it also gave us the opportunity to have access to contacts in that regard. I am certainly proud to have been a member of the Leadership Forum, and I feel it a true honor and privilege to have been able to have this wonderful and unique experience. I certainly will recommend this program to other lawyers, and I will be an advocate for the program in the future.”

“As leaders shift their focus to customers and quality, they realize that the old authoritarian leadership style does not work anymore.  To achieve quality, service and rapid response, leaders must utilize all available talent.  They must find ways to inspire, involve, and empower employees.  They must create a work environment that encourages commitment, innovation and cooperation.  Instead of evaluating, leaders now coach.  Instead of doing, they delegate.  Instead of telling, they facilitate.  No one is expected to boss anyone.  Everyone is expected to participate.” —Dr. Suzanne Willis Zoglio
