Head on Down to the Big Easy!
The Association of Bankruptcy Judicial Assistants (ABJA) is holding its Annual Educational Conference and Certified Bankruptcy Assistant (CBA) training October 12-15, 2010 in New Orleans.
Providing training and certification
The ABJA consists of judicial assistants to U.S. Bankruptcy judges and legal assistants or paralegals who have taken and passed the CBA exam. The ABJA provides training not only for judicial assistants, but paralegals, legal assistants and other non-lawyer support staff who either want to become certified or fulfill the requirements necessary to maintain certification. The Certified Bankruptcy Assistant program was first started in 1999 through the association's CLE/CEU Committee to help those who practice in this field develop the expertise and stay abreast of the changes in the highly specialized area of bankruptcy law.
Courses taught by Bankruptcy judges and attorneys
The CBA program will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, October 12-13, and consists of four parts (ethics, legal research, Bankruptcy Code and rules and grammar usage and writing) taught by both bankruptcy judges and specialized attorneys over a two-day period. The exam is optional and is given at the end of training on the second day. Registration is approximately $399 and includes the seminar, examination fee, study guide, lunch on Wednesday, and light refreshments.
Advanced training
A certification application must be filled out and approved prior to registration being accepted. For those already certified and simply needing to maintain their CLE/CEU credits, or anyone else interested in attending, advanced training will be held Thursday and Friday, October 14 and 15. Since the conference coincides with the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ), many of the judges have agreed to assist with the training.
Room rates for the host hotel, the Ritz Carlton, are $140 for single/double occupancy, $165 for triple and $190 for quad. When booking your room, be sure to use code AYOAYOB.
