First Recipient of the Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship Named

The Alabama Law Foundation announces that Morgan Goodwin is the first winner of the Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship. The foundation and the Women's Section of the Alabama State Bar established the scholarship in 2006. Mary Margaret Bailey, previous chair of the Women's Section, explained, "A scholarship not only helps women entering the profession, but also unites women already in the profession."

The Justice Janie L. Shores scholarship is named in honor of the first female Alabama Supreme Court Justice who was elected in 1974. "We chose to honor Justice Shores because she has accomplished so many groundbreaking achievements in the legal field and has been such a great role model," Bailey said.

The scholarship is awarded to female residents attending an Alabama law school. Goodwin attends the University of Alabama School of Law and will graduate in May 2010. She graduated from Huntingdon College magna cum laude in 2004. She has worked at the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Justice.

Current chair of the ASB Women's Section Appie Millsaps said, "A variety of contributors across Alabama have been very generous and working to build the scholarship has been fun." Millsaps added that she is "happy that efforts have come to fruition resulting in the first scholarship being awarded."

As the first recipient, Goodwin did more than express her appreciation to the Women's Section and the Alabama Law Foundation—she made a promise. After graduation, Goodwin plans to practice law in Alabama and looks forward to the time when she will "be a member of the Women's Section and can support the Janie L. Shores Scholarship fund."
