Every Effort Counts
You can help Haitian earthquake amputees without ever leaving the state

Sumter County District Court Judge Tammy J. Montgomery is leading a project to assist Haitian earthquake amputees and Alabama State Bar members are being asked to assist.

The Sumter County Children's Policy Council has created a 501 (C) 3 organization called "Children of the Village Network, Inc." (COTV). As a tax-exempt organization, individuals who donate directly to COTV are eligible to receive a tax deduction. Policy councils were created by legislation passed in 1999 that revised a 1975 law which was established to provide for the creation of local County children's policy councils to help address issues affecting children. Local juvenile judges are charged by mandate to form these councils. To promote active participation of these councils, the law also vests them with financial and operational responsibilities.

A goal and a deadline are set
Judge Montgomery noted that COTV has set a goal of obtaining 300 walking devices in the next 45 days to send to Haitian earthquake amputees. This same project is being coordinated worldwide under the auspices of Physicians for Peace.

If you have any used crutches, walkers, canes, wheelchairs, or shower chairs, please drop them off at the Sumter County Courthouse or at the United Steelworkers Hall (Local 351) in Tuscaloosa. If neither location is convenient, then you can deliver these mobility supplies to a Hanger Prosthetics & Devices Patient Care Center near you (locations listed below) and they will be shipped to Haiti:

Your donation allows an amputee to have freedom and mobility and provides some measure of relief to caregivers. For more information, call (205) 652-7364 or (205) 652-2821.

If your law firm or bar association is also participating in a campaign or project to provide assistance to Haitian earthquake victims, please contact Margaret Murphy. We would like to keep track of how Alabama lawyers are rendering service.
