“And Justice for All”
State Bar Announces 2010 Poster, Essay Contest for Students in Celebration of Law Day

The Alabama State Bar is calling for entries from students in grades K-12 across the state for its annual contest celebrating Law Day which is observed May 1.

State Bar President Tom Methvin said, "This year's theme, 'And Justice for All,' is especially meaningful because our goal is to make access to justice in Alabama a priority. Advocating on behalf of people living in poverty remains a core mission of the legal profession. It is our responsibility to be a part of making Alabama a leader in ensuring true access to justice for all."

Creative opportunities abound
"The theme lends itself to a variety of creative opportunities for students through the use of art and essays. We want to ensure that our youth are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively make their voices heard within our democracy," Methvin said.

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established May 1st as Law Day to strengthen our heritage of liberty, justice and equality under law. This is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law and to underscore how law and the legal process contributes to the freedoms we share.

Leadership Forum alumnae helm the observance
The poster contest is open to grades K-6, and the essay contest to students in grades 7-12. A total of $1,500 in U.S. Savings bonds will be awarded to winners. Teachers of winning students also receive a monetary gift for use in the classroom. Ashley Swink and Holly Alves, both of Mobile, co-chair the state bar's Law Day Committee.

The deadline for entry forms is Wednesday, March 31st, and winners will be announced on or before April 7th. Winners will receive special recognition at a Law Day Awards Ceremony and a luncheon to be held April 30th in Montgomery.
