Judge Sam C. Pointer Endowed Scholarship
Contribute to a New Scholarship Commemorating the Legacy of the Late Judge Pointer

Alabama's legal community recently lost one of its true luminaries with the passing of Judge Sam C. Pointer, Jr. Judge Pointer was a nationally respected former federal judge who was revered for his high respect of the law, tolerance of others, sharp intellect and attention to detail. He is also remembered for his expertise in handling cutting-edge, complex litigation.

Because Judge Pointer himself benefited from scholarships during his time in law school, two of his former law clerks, Julia Smeds Roth, a partner with Eyster, Key, Tubb, Roth, Middleton & Adams LLP, and Mac M. Moorer, a partner with Lightfoot, Franklin & White, LLC, are working closely with Judge Pointer's former friends, clerks and colleagues to establish the Judge Sam C. Pointer Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Alabama School of Law. Also assisting in the effort are former law clerks David Boyd, Linda Friedman, Georgia Haggerty and Frances Quick.

Judge Pointer served on the Alabama Law Review and earned a J.D., at the top of his class, from the University of Alabama School of Law in January 1957. He was appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1970 to serve as United States District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama. When he took the oath of office at age 35, Judge Pointer was the youngest person in the country then serving as District Judge. He retired from the bench in 2000 and joined the Birmingham firm of Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC. Judge Pointer also served as the University of Alabama School of Law's Distinguished Practitioner-in-Residence in 2007.
