SUMMARY:CLE: Practicing Law Should Not Kill You
DESCRIPTION:Register here.\nLawyers are near the top of some bad categories when it comes to all professions. We are near the top in substance abuse\, suicide depression\, anxiety\, divorce\, and burnout. Those are just the boxes that I check. Lawyers rate very poorly when it comes to job satisfaction as well. \nYou may be wondering what that looks like. You’re looking at Exhibit 1. I crossed the line into alcoholism by my estimate in 1992. It’s a progressive disease. It will only get worse\, never better. I was diagnosed with depression in 2001. It wasn’t the deep\, dark kind\, but it affects my life none the less. I first went I to AA in 2002. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t listen and follow through.  Things progressed badly. On my sobriety\, I was within seconds of suicide. I finally asked for help. I contacted ALAP and asked for help. I went to long-term treatment and got well. \nIt’s 2023. Thank goodness there’s a lot less stigma attached to mental illness. Help is a lot closer than you think. I promise you’re not bothering anyone. You can reach out to friends\, colleagues\, judges\, and even opposing counsel. You can call ALAP. Jeanne Marie\, who was the Director in 2004 saved my life. You can call me. I will talk to anyone\, anywhere\, anytime about any of this. \nDo you want to get better? Ask for help. If you are an alcoholic or addict\, AA or NA are available almost everywhere. If your spouse is one\, then there’s ALANON. Discuss your issues with your PCP. Exercise\, meditate\, or join other support groups. \nThere is hope for everyone. \n

SUMMARY:Pro Bono Month Book Club Meeting 1
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss Evicted by Matthew Desmond. This week we will dive into the Prologue – Chapter 6. \nAdd the meeting to your calendar here. \nReview the reading questions below. \n1. Have you ever been evicted or do you know anyone who has? Do you\nrepresent clients in eviction actions? If not\, do the clients you represent for\nother issues also struggle with eviction or housing? If the answer is yes\,\nwhat was your/their experience like\, and how has it affected your/their life?\n2. What was your experience reading Evicted? Were you surprised by\nwhat you learned? Was any particular scene or character’s story\nemotionally painful for you to witness? Did the stories of the characters in\nthe book reflect the stories you have heard from your own clients? If not\,\nhow were they different.\n3. Many people have very codified perceptions of “people who get evicted”\nand suspect that those people are largely responsible—through bad\ndecision making—for their circumstances. Did you feel this way before\nreading Evicted? Why or why not? Did your opinions change after reading\nthe book? If so\, how? Do your own pro bono clients face these same\njudgments about being at fault for their own evictions\, other legal issues\,\nor overall financial circumstances? Do you feel that these perceptions\naffect the number of attorneys providing services pro bono to low-income\nclients?\n4. Do you think housing should be a right in America?
