SUMMARY:Women\, Whiskey and Taxes
DESCRIPTION:In coordination with the gallery exhibit “Right or Privilege? Alabama Women and the Vote” at Vulcan Park and Museum\, assistant professor Tracey Roberts will present the complex and interlocking history of Women’s Suffrage\, Prohibition and the Federal Income Tax. \nBefore they became the most famous pair of advocates in the U.S. women’s suffrage movement\, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were temperance activists. Advocating for the prohibition of alcohol in a world in which women lacked both political and property rights\, they sought to curb other social ills: family poverty\, unemployment\, domestic violence\, and violent crime. Through the early 20th Century\, however\, the U.S. relied heavily on excise taxes\, including those on liquor\, to fund government operations. The passage and ratification of the 16th Amendment\, authorizing a federal income tax\, was needed before the 18th Amendment\, prohibiting alcohol\, could be passed. In turn\, the 19th Amendment\, granting women the right to vote\, was ratified\, in part\, on the strength of the time-honored argument that women should not face taxation without representation. \nExhibit partners include: Junior League of Birmingham\, Alabama State Council on the Arts\, Protective Life\, Birmingham Bar Foundation\, Alabama State Bar\, Shipt and Alabama Power \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: ABA Day
DESCRIPTION:ABA Day 2020 Registrants: \nAfter taking into consideration recent events\, including the declaration of a public health emergency in Washington D.C.\, the WHO declaration of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic\, the growing number of law firms\, corporations\, and  governmental agencies limiting or prohibiting travel\, the possibility that the decision to restrict public access to the U.S. Capitol until the end of March will be extended\, and the numerous recommendations against holding large group meetings\, it is clear that going forward with ABA Day would be unreasonable and likely impossible.Therefore\, the ABA has decided to cancel the in-person\, Washington DC portion of ABA Day this year. \nHowever\, we still need your help and leadership. We are expanding our plans for a coordinated online digital advocacy effort called ABA Day Digital 2020 to advocate for our approved issues on those same dates. We will share more information with you shortly – including a link to access great advocacy tools we have created for your use. We look forward to working with you to help the ABA get the voice of the legal profession heard on Capitol Hill again this year. \nI wish all of you good health. \nSincerely\, \nDeborah Enix-Ross\nChair\, ABA Day Planning Committee

SUMMARY:Timbs v. Indiana One Year Later: The Future of Civil Asset Forfeiture
DESCRIPTION:The University of Alabama School of Law is hosting a symposium on Friday\, March 6 in the Bedsole Moot Court Room. The symposium\, Timbs v. Indiana One Year Later: The Future of Civil Asset Forfeiture\, will explore the consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court case. In its landmark 2019 opinion\, Timbs v. Indiana\, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Eighth Amendment’s Excessive Fines Clause is an incorporated protection applicable to the states and may\, as a result\, regulate state civil asset forfeiture. This symposium will feature three panel discussions with prominent law professors and practitioners and a keynote address from Wesley Hottot\, the senior attorney at the Institute for Justice\, who argued the Timbs case before the U.S. Supreme Court. SUMMARY:Salute to Selma Women's March 2020
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nSELMA\, Ala. –Salute Selma\, Inc. a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization wants you to join us on sacred grounds as we commemorate the sacrifices and successes of black women from around the country for Selma’s 55th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday\, the Selma to Montgomery March and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 during the Annual Bridge Crossing Commemoration. We want to show the world that our voices matter and will be heard. While celebrating for the first time in history\, black women leading this Historic Reenactment March Across Edmund Pettus Bridge! \nThese amazing days of black liberation and human rights activism will start on Saturday\, February 29th\, 2020\, with an Economic Empowerment Village/Health & Wellness Expo. On Sunday\, March 1st\, 2020\, there will be a Salute to Selma Church Service led by Ministers from across the nation\, followed by a Historic “Pre-march Rally\,” which will culminate with the Selma’s Historic Bridge Crossing Reenactment! These events are strategically planned a few days before the nations’ “Super Tuesday’s” Democratic Party presidential primaries. The weekend is aimed at invigorating and galvanizing the power of the Black Vote. We invite you to join thousands of influential African Americans in the fields of politics\, entertainment\, education\, and entrepreneurship as we discuss what’s occurring in our nation\, and how we should respond.   The 2020 Presidential election has reignited the collective synergy that African Americans have influential power\, tenacity and that there is enormous value in our vote.  We stand united in solidarity with Selma for one mission and one goal in 2020! \nSalute Selma\, Inc.\, is also excited to announce the confirmation of the National Pan-Hellenic Council\, which is comprised of the nine historical Greek-lettered Fraternities and Sororities that will descend in large numbers to participate in the Annual Bridge Crossing Reenactment.  The National Presidents of each Greek-lettered Organization understands the importance of the 2020 Presidential election and are excited to be in Selma and are ready to march in solidarity across the Historic Edmund Pettus Bridge.  Catrena Norris Carter\, Co-Founder & National Coordinator for Salute Selma\, Inc. feels this is groundbreaking\, “It sends a strong message to the world that these organizations whose collective memberships comprise of MILLIONS of this country’s premier black leaders coming together to support\, celebrate and speak on the power of the black vote in solidarity\, is indeed powerful!” \nOnce again\, Selma will serve as a national backdrop for civil rights and human rights! Abina D. Billups\, Co-Founder & Board Chairman for Salute Selma\, Inc. said\, “In 1965\, men and women\, young and old\, suffered and died for the Right to Vote. Fifty-five years later\, extremists are doing everything they can to take away our hard-earned rights\, liberties\, and power that we have in the Vote\,” therefore\, she believes coming to Selma should be an “annual pilgrimage.” Especially since every day\, a new wave of gut-wrenching developments spurs out of this current White House administration. Blatant attacks on our democracy and daily threats to disenfranchise black and brown people. \nWe have the Power to Protect our Rights\, and we must answer their threats to our way of life. What better place to unite and fight for the right to vote? Who better to come to Selma to help lead the fight? \nPlease join us. Let us know that you and your organization will join our national movement. \nAdditional details of the official schedule for Salute Selma’s Inc. Commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday\, the Selma to Montgomery March Reenactment\, and the passage of the Voting Rights Act will be released in January 2020. \nFor more information\, please visit our website www.saluteselma.com or contact Catrena Norris Carter at (205) 266-0304 or Abina D Billups at (334) 526.0025. \n### \nContact Information: \nCatrena Norris Carter – 205. 266.0304 | catrena.carter@saluteselma.org \nAbina D.
