Deputy City Attorney

The City of Mobile’s Legal Department is seeking applications for an experienced attorney for a Deputy City Attorney vacancy. The City of Mobile Legal Department has two divisions, criminal, to prosecute violations and misdemeanors in municipal and circuit courts, and civil, to represent the City on governmental, legislative, contract, personnel and miscellaneous civil matters. The selected candidate will work with the mayor’s office and supervise a team of in-house lawyers. The candidate will assist the Civil Division by maintaining the daily workflow of contracts, ordinances, legal opinions for City departments, supervising outside counsel on litigation concerning the City, assisting the executive branch of government, tracking State legislation, and responding to public records requests. The selected candidate will also be responsible for such other matters as assigned, including occasional appellate work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess a J.D. degree
  • Be an active member of the bar (Alabama)
  • Have at least five years post-JD experience in the legal field.

The ideal candidate will have supervisory experience and a strong background in contract negotiation, real estate transactions and civil litigation. Candidates should also possess superior leadership skills, outstanding oral and written communication skills, exceptional legal writing and research skills, strong interpersonal skills, fair and sound judgment, interest in public service, and the organizational ability to handle a large workload.

Salary Range: $120,000 to $140,000
