General Counsel & Director of Legal Advocacy
The Alabama Association of School Boards is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as general counsel, lead our legal advocacy efforts, and provide essential guidance to local school boards. Join our team in shaping the future of public education in Alabama!
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor
- License to practice law in Alabama
- Experience in developing, reviewing legislation and/or policy desirable
- Experience in or around public education desirable
- Experience in association work desirable
- Excellent written communication skills
- Experience preparing and delivering presentations
- Ability to work with teams
Supervision:
The General Counsel and Director of Legal Advocacy will report to the Executive Director.
Compensation:
Commensurate with experience. Generous leave and benefits package, including participation in the Teachers Retirement System, PEEHIP and paid sick and vacation leave.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as association general counsel
- Assist with the association’s legislative program
- Coordinate activities for the Alabama Council of School Board Attorneys
- Write and review publications on legal topics
- Prepare and make presentations on legal topics
- Direct association policy services
- Supervise staff attorney
- Field member calls
Expectations:
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to communicate effectively to racially, socially, educationally and politically diverse groups and individuals.
- Strong writing and speaking skills
- Occasional interstate travel and some overnight travel required
- Position is full-time
- Office is in Montgomery Alabama

AASB assists locals school board members in many areas, including governance, finance, legal, legislative advocacy, policymaking, evaluations, training and search services.
