John Lewis Fellow

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama.

LSA provides free, client-centered, civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians and collaborates with others across the state and nation to find solutions to systemic issues caused by poverty and social justice inequities.

In honor of LSA’s ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established in 2019 to encourage young attorneys interested in working at the intersection of poverty law and racial justice to build experience with a nonprofit civil legal aid law firm located in Alabama. This position has the possibility of working from any of LSA’s statewide offices in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa.

LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated commitment to devote their time and efforts to strong advocacy for clients in the face of social injustices. John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama’s strong network of pro bono attorneys. Fellows will advocate for clients, coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering.
