Beware of Fraud Targeting Attorneys

The Alabama State Bar has recently received multiple calls from lawyers targeted in collection/settlement fraud scams. If you receive communications that you suspect could be fraudulent, you can always refer to the AvoidAClaim blog, which serves as a clearing house for information on scams targeting lawyers and law firms. If you think you may have been targeted, let us know so we can help protect your fellow lawyers from these unscrupulous predators.

Public Notice for Appointment of United States Magistrate Judge

The Judicial Conference of the United States has authorized the appointment of a full-time United States Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama in Montgomery. This position will be available to be filled on Aug. 1, 2020. Magistrate Judge Application forms may be obtained on the U.S. District Court's website.

31st Annual Mobile-Baldwin Bench and Bar Conference

The Mobile Bar Association and Baldwin County Bar Association are partnering together to host the annual Bench and Bar Conference on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. The conference offers 4.0 hours of MCLE credit and 1.0 hour of ethics, networking opportunities and a chance to spend one-on-one time with justices and judges from throughout the state. New this year are breakout sessions focusing on civil law and criminal law. Award-winning humorist and political satirist P.J. Open Enrollment for the HMCBA BCBS Health Insurance

For the second year in a row, the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association's insurance premiums have not increased, and its plan is beating the Blue Cross Blue Shield benchmark.  The current rates and deductibles are $672.53 per month with a $500 deductible for single coverage and $1,57.99 per month with a $1,00 deductible for family coverage. You can compare your current plan to the HMCBA's plan at www.huntsvillebar.org or contact Director Cindy Seeley. Membership in the HMCBA is open to all members of the Alabama State Bar in good standing for an annual fee of $150.

Veterans Day is fast approaching, and the Alabama State Bar wants to celebrate members who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. If you'd like to be considered for our feature, email us a short description of your service and a picture.
