2026 Legislative Update: March 20, 2026
Published on March 23, 2026
LEGISLATIVE SUMMARY
The tenth week of the 2026 Alabama Legislative session is now finished.
The legislature is taking next week off for spring break and will return on March 31. Having completed 24 days, with only 6 remaining, a sense of the end being in sight has pervaded the building. As of this time, 1,010 bills have been introduced, 375 in the Senate and 645 in the House of Representatives.
The introduction of new bills slowed significantly this week. As a reminder, it takes a minimum of 5 legislative days to pass a bill; if they have not been introduced by this time, there is little chance of final passage. Most bills filed this week are local or political in nature.
Committees had a lot of activity this week, with very full agendas and heartier debates. Some bills in committee this week include a bill dealing with the wholesale of property, the crime of doxing, the creation of the crime of interference with a first responder, changes to certain quiet title actions, updating certain domestic violence crimes, and changes to the crime of the discharge of firearms into occupied vehicles and dwellings.
The Alabama Law Institute updates to the Alabama Business and Nonprofit Entities Code (SB187 and HB 248) were also passed out of committee this week. There was a significant amendment to this bill, removing the nonprofit changes and other substantive changes. Please see the tracking below to view this amendment.
The Senate and House of Representatives calendars for debate this week contained many bills, but both calendars also contained some controversial items, resulting in filibusters. However, many bills did pass, and all of those updates of relevance are contained in the tracking below.
As always, the Alabama State Bar encourages all members to be aware of legislation that may impact court costs and fees. Access to justice is a priority. Please be aware of advertisements that may be occurring for local bills and those that may already be filed to use the courts as a fundraiser for non-court entities. We encourage you to be informed and notify us as well.
LEGISLATIVE TRACKING
We are excited to present a new tracking method for our members this year. Hopefully, it will prove to be a more user-friendly experience. The Alabama State Bar provides legislative status reports concerning pending legislation that may be of interest to our members. The reports divide legislation into the following categories for your convenience: Civil/General; Court Costs; Criminal; Domestic Relations; Elections, Ethics, and Government Relations (EEGR); Judicial; and Tax.
A comprehensive master list containing all tracked legislation is also available here.
