Accounting Specialist Legal Services Alabama

Legal Services Alabama, Inc. (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. LSA provides free, client-centered civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians and collaborates with others across the state and nation to find solutions to systemic issues caused by poverty and social justice inequities.

This position is split between grants administration support and general accounting.

On the accounting side, this position:

  • Assists with the Accounts Payable process
  • Maintains accounts payable files and the prepaid expense schedule
  • Assists with monthly closings and bank deposits
  • General Ledger account reconciliations
  • Supports 1099 preparation
  • Fixed asset tracking

On the grants side, this position:

  • Creates grant billing packets
  • Maintains grant files and supporting documentation
  • Tracks grant expenditures against approved budgets
  • Assists with funder reports under the direction of the Director of Finance
  • Helps gather documentation for audits and monitoring visits

This hybrid position is based out of LSA’s Central Office in Montgomery. This position is a wonderful opportunity for a very detail-oriented professional with several years of accounting or bookkeeping experience.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with grants is not required – we are happy to train the grants-specific side of the role
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field is preferred, but not required
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining confidentiality are required
  • Ability to work with a variety of parties inside and outside the organization in a non-confrontational manner
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Excel) is required
  • Experience with financial management software (such as Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT) is a plus
  • Experience with nonprofits or working with low-income populations is a plus

Salary: $43,645 to $53,795 based on experience

Benefits: LSA offers an excellent benefits package, valued at approximately $20,000, including six weeks of paid leave annually and 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for each employee.
