Published on March 2, 2026
LEGISLATIVE SUMMARY
This week, the Alabama Legislature completed its seventh week. It was a three-day session week, with committee meetings and session on Wednesday. Seventeen of the allotted 30 days are now complete. A total of 864 bills have been introduced: 531 in the House of Representatives and 333 in the Senate. There was a lot of activity in both houses this week, so please follow the tracking below for bills of relevance to your practice area.
Some bills of interest introduced this week include new procedures for certain search and seizure warrants; changes to criminal defenses related to mental illness; state AI policies; changes to municipal foreclosure procedures; as well as several bills related to education policies and municipalities.
Some bills debated in committee this week include probable cause in bail jumping; the new Uniform Child Custody Enforcement Act; jurisdiction in domestic violence protection orders; and notification of schools when students are charged or adjudicated for certain offenses. Two Alabama Law Institute bills were in committee this week: the Alabama Uniform Trust Code was amended to conform with the Alabama Qualified Dispositions in Trust Act, and an amendment to the Alabama Principal and Income Act allowing the trustee to make certain adjustments was considered.
There were around 86 bills debated on the House and Senate floors this week. The calendars for passage are growing as bills are making their way through the process. In the Senate, a bill that would update how parole revocation is addressed in certain instances; a statute of limitations for real estate appraisers; allowance of remote appearances in certain parole hearings; updates to the Court’s Advance Technology and Data Fund; an update to the bail bond bill; and distributions from the Opioid Settlement Fund were debated.
As always, the Alabama State Bar encourages all members to be aware of legislation that may impact court costs and fees. Access to justice is a priority. Please be aware of advertisements that may be occurring for local bills and those that may already be filed to use the courts as a fundraiser for non-court entities. We encourage you to be informed and notify us as well.
LEGISLATIVE TRACKING
We are excited to present a new tracking method for our members this year. Hopefully, it will prove to be a more user-friendly experience. The Alabama State Bar provides legislative status reports concerning pending legislation that may be of interest to our members. The reports divide legislation into the following categories for your convenience: Civil/General; Court Costs; Criminal; Domestic Relations; Elections, Ethics, and Government Relations (EEGR); Judicial; and Tax.
