(Salary Range: $58,111.20 – $107,824.80)
Position Overview
The Alabama Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified attorney to join its legal team. This position requires work on a wide range of legal matters involving the judiciary, administrative policies, and court operations across the state. The position will provide legal counsel and support to the Administrative Director of Courts, the AOC Legal Director, judges, circuit clerks, and other court staff and personnel.

Typical Duties (may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Provide legal advice and counsel to the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts on matters related to court administration and state law.
- Assist with the coordination of legal responses to inquiries from judges, circuit clerks, court personnel, and other stakeholders.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to assist with the development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
- Assist in the drafting of legislative proposals, rules, policies, contracts, and legal documents for the AOC.
- Represent the AOC in hearings, meetings, legislative matters, and other legal proceedings as required.
- Prepare and review contracts, agreements, and other legal documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Prepare and update court forms.
- Assist with drafting language for criminal charge codes.
- Assist with Information Technology practices, procedures, and protocols relating to court records.
- Review judicial procurements and negotiate, review, and submit professional service contracts.
- Teach court certification classes.
- Perform related work as required.
Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
- A solid understanding of legal principles, procedures, and terminology.
- Knowledge of Alabama state laws, court procedures, and the structure of the judicial system.
- Proficient in conducting thorough legal research using a variety of resources, including legal databases.
- Strong ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide clear, concise, and sound legal opinions.
- Ability to interpret and apply legal principles in practical and policy-oriented contexts.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, precise, and professional legal documents, including memos, opinions, reports, and correspondence.
- Skill in drafting contracts, policies, regulations, and legislative proposals that meet legal requirements and align with the AOC’s mission.
- Strong oral communication skills, with the ability to discuss complex legal concepts with judges, court personnel, government officials and non-legal stakeholders.
- Comfortable representing the AOC in meetings, hearings, and discussions with internal and external parties.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple legal matters simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
- Strong critical thinking skills to assess legal situations and anticipate potential challenges or implications.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues, state agencies, judicial officers, court personnel, and other stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using legal research tools such as Westlaw, office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF), and databases.
- Familiarity with case management and electronic filing software and other tools used within the judicial system is preferred but not required.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Current and valid licensure by the Alabama State Bar.
