Legal Aid Society of Birmingham is Seeking New Executive Director
The Legal Aid Society of Birmingham is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Executive Director (ED). The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Trustees and is the primary champion and voice for Legal Aid’s mission, vision, values, and programs. For over half a century, Legal Aid has provided high quality legal representation to indigent adults and children in the Birmingham and Jefferson County region.
The ED is responsible for leadership and management of Legal Aid’s operations, contract negotiations, programs, strategic plans, and supervision of all staff. This is a full-time position that requires excellent organizational, communication, and managerial skills. Experience in the legal and nonprofit environment is essential. The Legal Aid Society of Birmingham has established itself as the premier provider of legal representation for children and low-income adults in Family Court and Drug Court in the Birmingham metropolitan area.
Specific duties include:
- Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of Legal Aid and its staff
- Represent Legal Aid at local, state, and national events, and as a media spokesperson
- Manage and foster Legal Aid’s relationships and partnerships within nonprofit, legal, legislative, educational, and service communities
- Identify and pursue opportunities and trends in the field to support Legal Aid’s programs and development
- Prepare program budgets for approval by the Board of Trustees
- Ensure fiscal accountability, integrity, and maintain sound oversight of financials under the supervision of the Board Finance Committee
- Lead contract negotiations and work to diversify and grow Legal Aid revenue and programs consistent with its mission, vision, and strategic plan
- Apply for grants and ensure compliance with all grant activities and reporting
- Ensure compliance with administrative and legal responsibilities, including nonprofit, federal, and state requirements
- Prepare and coordinate marketing and outreach materials for all Legal Aid programs
- Participate in or speak at forums, educational programs, and community meetings on indigent defense and policy, promoting Legal Aid’s policy agenda and initiatives
- Track, measure, and evaluate the outcomes of Legal Aid’s programs
Qualified applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama and be a member of the Alabama State Bar Association and in good standing. Additional minimum qualifications include:
- Experience representing clients in criminal and juvenile courts in Alabama
- Experience writing letters, grants, policies, op-eds, and organizational documents
- Working knowledge of office technology, hardware, and software systems
- Experience fundraising and pursuing diverse and sustainable revenue streams for non-profit organizations.
