Staff Attorney

Job Details:

  • An employee in this position is responsible for a professional method of service that will meet the needs of family survivors of homicide victims and robbery victims.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of the effect of violent crime and the court systems in Alabama.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of current trends of criminal activity, sentencing, rehabilitation, reparations, and treatments.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally, and in writing. Must be able to work on call after regular business hours.
  • Must be able to travel and stay overnight when necessary for court.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently complete files for individual cases which include progress notes and client information sheets.
  • Must be able to prepare daily effectively and efficiently and weekly reports for the director of the organization.
  • Regular office hours are 8-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Monday-Thursday in office. Friday from home.
    • Any time after hours will be given in flex time.
  • Working with homicide victims’ family members and victims of robbery as a liaison in the criminal justice system.
  • Must be able explain victims bill of rights and provide victims or their families with information regarding trials, hearings, and appeals.
  • Must be able to explain the criminal justice process to victims or their families.
  • Filing emergency motions to include, but not limited to probate, emergency custody, protection orders.
  • Must be able to work well with the various district attorneys’ offices.
  • Must be able to work in the courtroom after hours.
  • Must be able to and provide care and comfort to victims, as they are in the court proceedings.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently complete files and training records as related to the canine program.
  • Must be able to prepare daily effective and efficient, weekly and quarterly reports for the director of the organization.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  1. Researching each criminal case and notifying the point of contact of the upcoming hearing, trial, etc. by phone call or text message.
  2. Checking the docket daily for all 8 counties and identifying the court cases that needed to be attended. (Trials are most important, followed by bond and preliminary hearings.)
  3. Draft and file emergency motions for protection orders and emergency child custody, etc.
  4. Sit in the courtroom with each victim and or family contact and explain the procedures of what is transpiring in the court setting.
  5. Partner with the victim service officer and/or the prosecutor assigned to the individual case to assist in explaining the procedure of each individual case and what is transpiring.

This position is a partnership with each prosecutor’s office, and this position is an ambassador for the agency.

Starting salary ranges from 65,000-$69,000.00 based on experience and education.
