Volunteer Lawyers Program – Pro Bono Clinic Coordinator
Description of Position: The Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) seeks a highly motivated, organized individual to coordinate pro bono activities, events, and clinics. This role is an exceptional opportunity to make a meaningful impact in low-income and disadvantaged communities while collaborating with staff and volunteer attorneys on impactful legal work. This full-time, salaried position involves program management, case management, attorney recruitment, and community outreach.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement new and innovative community legal assistance events within the program’s service area.
- Recruit and engage private attorneys to volunteer in community clinics and events.
- Develop creative programming to streamline the volunteer process, including training, support, and case management to maximize legal assistance for low-income clients.
- Maintain client files, including status tracking of open cases.
- Foster and support relationships with community partners, court staff, and volunteers.
- Occasionally represent clients when volunteer attorneys are unavailable.
- Support the Director and program staff in managing the database of volunteers, cases, and projects.
- Assist in gathering information for annual report and grants.
- Promote programs and projects through various communication channels.
- Participate in after-hours and weekend legal assistance clinics and events.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Director.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven project management, organizational, and administrative skills
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, networking, and leadership abilities
- Ability to analyze and simplify complex information for diverse audiences
- A compassionate and empathetic approach to understanding the social, economic, and legal challenges faced by low-income individuals with limited access to legal services.
- Skills in building and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and community partners
- Demonstrated capacity to collaborate within and contribute to a team-oriented environment
- D., admitted to practice law in the State of Alabama (preferred)
- Ability to type efficiently, utilize a screen reader if needed, and handle the physical demands of off-site legal clinics, including lifting up to 30 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with marketing software, tools, and social media
- Previous experience in legal program management or community outreach
- Familiarity with data management systems and reporting tools
- Experience in coordinating activities and managing the work of staff or volunteers
