Lucas Lopez Honored with Pro Bono Law Student Award

MIRIMAR BEACH, Fla. and MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program has awarded Lucas Lopez with the 2022 Pro Bono LAW Student Award.

Lopez was presented with the award at the 145th Annual Meeting of the Alabama State Bar on June 25, 2022, at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa in Miramar Beach, Fla. Lopez was celebrated for the many ways he has impacted his community and peers.

Lopez is a third-year law student at the University of Alabama School of Law. He volunteers with the Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program monthly assistance clinic in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama State Bar President Taze Shepard said, “The Alabama State Bar is proud to award Lucas Lopez with the Law Student Award. He already exemplifies a dedication to serving his community through pro bono work, and we are lucky to have a bright future through individuals like Lopez.”

At the clinic, Lucas assists with client screening and intake. In addition to volunteering, he has helped train and recruit other student volunteers. During the clinics, he invites student volunteers to watch him perform a client screening, allowing them to get more comfortable before encouraging them to work on their own. As a result of his leadership, the clinic always has more than enough student volunteers each month to minimize the client’s wait time before speaking with an attorney.

“Lucas Lopez is very deserving of this award,” Alabama State Bar Executive Director Terri Lovell said. “The Tuscaloosa community and the Volunteer Lawyers Program have both benefitted tremendously from his work at the monthly clinics.”
