May 1 Proclaimed 'Law Day' in Alabama

Montgomery, AL – Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has proclaimed May 1, 2024, as Law Day in the State of Alabama. Law Day is observed every year to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. It also provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberties and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.
Each year, the Alabama State Bar commemorates the day with community outreach and Law Day activities for local school children. Nearly 300 Alabama teachers requested to have a lawyer visit their classroom in-person or virtually on (or around) Wednesday, May 1, to give a 45-minute presentation to students of all ages.
Students, ranging from Pre-K to high school seniors, will get to ask lawyers questions about their careers and the legal profession. In addition, middle and high school students will have an opportunity to watch a short video about this year’s Law Day theme, “Voices of Democracy,” which encourages Americans to lift our voices to maintain our system of laws and to ensure that our democracy endures.
The proclamation reads in part, “I, Governor Kay Ivey, urge everyone to observe this day by renewing their commitment to democracy by becoming informed, participating in elections, and holding our elected officials accountable.
Bar associations throughout the country will be celebrating their own Law Day events in virtual or in-person events.
