There’s no doubt that lawyers procrastinate, and I’ve found myself at the end of the year having to take a six hour worker’s compensation course to get my require hours in, when I’ve never handled a worker’s comp case in my life. If you’re getting down to the wire, need a few more hours and can’t find a substantive course that suits your preferred areas of practice, here are some upcoming courses that can benefit almost anyone in any practice niche.

First, on Wednesday of this week (December 17th) there’s Law Practice: Tips from the Masters presented by ABICLE and co-sponsored by Freedom Court Reporting. The program, which starts with registration and continental breakfast buffet at 7:30 a.m., will take place at The Club in Birmingham. Topics include how to develop your client base, whether from a plaintiff’s or a defendant’s practice perspective, Internet marketing, advice from the judges, and information on discovery of electronic evidence. This program is approved for 6 hours of MCLE credit, including 1.5 ethics hours. The pre-registration cost is $295 with handouts on CD or $329 for printed handouts and the CD. Next, up is What Every Lawyer Needs to Know about E-Discovery. Presented by Legal Imaging, LLC, this program will include an overview of electronic discovery, identification and preservation, e-discovery updates from both the judicial and practitioner’s perspective, and the ethics of electronic discovery. This program has been approved for 6 hours MCLE credit, including 1 hour of ethics. It will be presented twice: first at state bar headquarters in Montgomery on Friday, December 19th and again in Mobile on Tuesday, December 30th at the Crescent Theater, 208 Dauphin Street. Both programs begin with registration at 8:00 a.m. The cost for the full program is $295 or you can register for only the ethics hour for $75. he last CLE opportunity won’t take place until after the end of this CLE year, but it’s still worth putting on your calendar now. NBI will present Attorney’s Fees: Getting Paid for Your Legal Services at the Harbert Center in Birmingham on Thursday, March 5th. This program will cover case selection strategies, representation agreements, ethical fee determination, taxation of attorneys’ fees and resolving fee disputes.
